Developing a talent at an older age
This article got me thinking. http://thetalentcode.com/2014/08/27/24-rules-for-becoming-an-adult-prodigy/

What talent could I become great at? Coming up with boring threads on forums I have already nailed!

Didn't Bobby George take up darts well late. Steve Way took up running at 33 and 17stone and just ran in the commonwealth games. Bob Fisher in his 50's decided to become the best free throw basketball player in the world and now holds multiple world records.

Think it boils down to having the time and dedication to practice. Most people have lives.

After a back op that went wrong, I started losing the feelings in my fingertips, as a tool maker this was a nightmare.
Use it or lose it, I was told, so I started making Airfix, Revell, Tamiya etc models. Now I make them for Hobbycraft in my spare time and some bespoke ones (mainly motorbikes) for customers or sell them on e-bay.

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell has that in it too, stating Bill Gates as one of the privileged few who's parents had enough money to buy him "programming time"

I'd love to learn how to play the piano. Never played an instrument before so not sure how tricky it will be.

I think the difference is when you're young you have loads of free time to practise like a professional would, in terms of time. When you work and have responsibilities there is only a limited amount of time.

I enjoyed watching this clip of Bob Fisher who decided at 50 to be the best in the world at something. Basketball free throws. "Anyone could do I what I do, if they knew what I know'

Mentor, as you may or may not know I have my own way of testing theories and the truth of it is that for you to follow your passion successfully you're going to have to develop a thicker skin.

Do that, you'll get my vote.

Actually I was a very promising guitarist in my teens but haven't played in years. I'd love to start up again, reckon I could be pretty good. Might have to start up lessons again and actually bother to learn music rather than just tab.

I think the whole 'lack of time' cop-out is definitely an excuse rather than a reason for the majority of people.

Most on here would have more than enough hours in the week (myself included) to dedicate themselves to a skill or a passion if they were to cut out, or streamlined, all the wasted time.

I have done clay pidgeon shooting on two different stag do's and won both times having never done it before.

A career switch may be on the cards. Is there any money in it??

It's always more difficult learning new skills when older because the neural pathways are set and it takes a lot more work to create new ones, as a youngster your body is wanting to create them and is primed ready to reinforce repetetive actions..

I was shit at golf when I was younger but now I can practice and analyze where I go wrong and how my swing cam be improved to ensure each shot reaches it's optimum distance. The result is now that i'm older I am still shit at golf. What a cunt of a game.

You do need to have a degree of natural ability and/or the build/body mechanics if you want to develop a physical talent to a high level though.
